"She will be beautiful," said Frith, stroking his wife's stomach. "I'll stay. I've helped you deliver before. This time can't be much different." He kissed her forehead lightly. He continued to stroke her stomach.

Clara smiled. She felt the pain grow more and more intense after a while. She pushed, the pain souring throughout her body, for the baby to be born. She was familiar with the process of childbirth. She, like before, caved into some painful screams. Her skin grew clammy and she grew to be tired. She kept on pushing. Her knuckles were white from gripping the bedsheets. Sometimes, she would pause however, for some of her strength and breath to return. Her eyes reflected how exhausted she was from the attempts.

Clara was afraid that something might go wrong. "N-No," she said, "don't pull," She pushed again, tears streaming down her sweaty face. She pushed harder until the child was born after so long. It was crying.

Frith took the child, careful of it. He held the bloody being in his hands. Carefully, he cut the cord that connected mother and child. "I'm going to clean our child off," he said, going to leave with it.

"May I hold him after?" she asked, her eyes proud and happy upon hearing the child's cries. She was panting, still exhausted, but happy nonetheless.

"Of course my love," he said. Frith left with the baby, going to clean it and wrap it in a blanket. He looked at his child, eyes full of pride. "You are mine, and you are wonderful." He entered his room where there was a bowl filled with water. Slowly, he went to put the baby in there to clean the blood off.

Frith finished cleaning the baby. He took the child out of the bloody water, shushing him softly as he began to dry the baby off with a cloth. "It's okay, Daddy's got you," he said. He tossed the cloth aside and put a blanket around the baby. Frith headed back to his wife's room, cradling their offspring in his arms.

The child calmed down, and started whimpering. Clara was still laying in bed, her eyes closed for rest so that she would gather the strength to carry her baby.

"Yes, I was only resting," she said as she opened her eyes. She sat up the best she could. The baby shifted in Frith's arms.

Her eyes glinted, cradling the baby. She held it close to her. "He's wonderful," she said. The baby was sleeping soundly. "He has such pale skin." She kissed the child's cheek lovingly.

"And you get to name him," said Frith, sitting on the side of the bed. The king had a gentle smile, loving his son from the very beginning. He lightly rubbed Clara's leg though, proud of her for bearing their child.

Frith's Notebook
Flee Against the Night


Today, a rivaling kingdom attacked us. They were a lot stronger. To save my family, we were forced to flee. We now sit miles away in the darkness, it is cold. With my wife and I, we have our six year old son, Caius, and our daughter Lucia, who is now three. Watching my family, I fear for their safety. I would have sent them out on their own without me if I had known it was safe. Our kingdom has fallen. Luckily, my armor is valuable and I always carry gold with me. It is just a shame our children will not grow up in their former homeland. We will carry on with our journey and find a new land to settle in.

Frith held Lucia, who was beginning to fuss. She was three but hated sitting still. It seemed like she loved to cause trouble. He stroked her hair lightly, playing with her hair ever so calmly. Lucia was only three now, still young. Frith was struggling to keep her quiet. He sat on a log, bouncing the girl on his leg gently.

I was holding my son so close. I feared for my children's life, as well as my husband's. I do not know if he would be guaranteed reincarnation like I would be. I don't know if my children would be. I didn't want any of them to die at all. I want shelter for my children and husband. I want them safe, I want them safe...

She bounced the little girl in her arms once she had picked up the girl. She caressed the girl's hair. She hummed a melody. "Lucia, you must rest now," she said calmly. Caius sat next to his father, quiet.
